Another example of #53 with a straight top rail.  Here the open mortised squares have been placed in the mid-rail.

Very similar to Gate #52, with the grid dividers at only 1-5/8" widths rather than the 2-1/2" widths of the #52.   A subtle departure that results in a much less muscular design.
