Prowell’s Arts and Crafts gates 210 were designed as a accompaniment to Garden Gate #115-A

As with gate #115, we have employed a series of Wenge hardwood thru-tenons to stabilize the horizontal rails from cupping or bowing over the years. The lower pendulums also serve to stabilize the horizontals, while providing the segmented illusion of a subtle suspension.

On the one hand, a seemingly simple design. On the other hand, not so simple. Encouraging the scrutiny of an unraveling puzzle and the danger of unraveling such a schematic leading to an unraveled imbalance that leaves the viewer with either recurring headaches or…a revelatory equilibrium that is everlasting and unrivaled.  

A ‘Thru-Tenon’ is a single uninterrupted piece of wood that loosely extends all the way through the mating mortises. As its purpose is merely one of alignment, glue is not involved.

Life in the prowell shop is an act of never-ending tinkering, revising, and fussbudgeting over how much is too much. How little is too little. The driveway gates 210-1 is simply an extension of the pedestrian gate style 115 to the drive gates 210 to 210-1.

Fitting the upper through-tenons. For those gates that will be painted or stained with a solid-body stain, the wenge is supplanted with cedar.

One of the more complex assemblies. Always better to error on the patient side and here, we’ll glue up one stile while dry-fitting the other. Reducing our actual glue-up to something manageable and less prone to inciting a nervous breakdown.
