Standard top rail width but more complex Pattern Block layout
Mill Valley, CA
The Wood Garden Fence Style #16-5. Every picket is supported by a corresponding Pattern Block. Although Pattern Blocks are available as an aesthetic for all heights, they are a required feature for heights over 60″. Without them and the pickets are vulnerable over the years and decades to the misbehavior of bowing.
The standard narrower top horizontal rail.

Amedly of multiple Prowell products with the Fence style #16 shown here along with fence style #2o.
Because our homeowner is an architect, we naturally followed his lead and strayed from the standard design to incorporate a segmented upper section as a stand-alone panel–similar to our Pony Panels. Separated by 1-½”.
And, well . . . the Penguineers, gathered in anticipation of an early winter?

CUSTOM WOOD FENCE PANELS #16-4
(Maximum of one joint per panels )
Sonoma County, CA
Wood Fence Panels #16-4 is distinguished by a need for semi-radius fence-lines. Instead of actually creating a laminated bent horizontal rail, the panels are instead joined at junctures between the posts with a maximum of two joints per panel. This, in conjunction with the setting of the site fence posts, can simulate a radius layout by means of joinery rather than laminations.
Joined panels have a maximum width of 36″ width.

Any of our wood fence designs that provide solid panels would, in this application, have reduced the existing patio enclosure with a much greater sense of diminished space.
Two narrow 10″ flanking Wood Fence Panels serve to offset the gate from the almost identical panels.

IN-PROGRESS
WOOD GARDEN FENCE #16–PROGRESS
Dallas, TX
Each leading edge is trued on the joiner before the pickets themselves are ripped initially on the bandsaw to prevent bowing. From the bandsaw, they go through the thickness planer to create the final net width, and from the planer to the drum sander for the finished edge sanding. Although this process weeds out 90% of the potentially bowed pickets, the insistence for true and straight pickets is furthered by the use of the Pattern Blocks joined to each picket such that no single picket is left alone and vulnerable to the ravages of solitude.
WOOD GARDEN FENCE #16–PROGRESS
The Pattern Blocks are mortised and joined individually to their corresponding pickets. Shown below, the importance of a square layout when clamping to insure the ends of the pickets are even.
