T raditional architecture seemingly at home with a rather un-traditional arbor and yard gate. Garden Art–and that’s what this is–by its very existence serves an undefinable purpose. A gate, and arbor, that are set front and center, exposed to all passersby. Not serving with any functionality beyond that ephemeral reward to those who simply appreciate its existence.

Wenge inlay and black acrylic rods establish a pattern that is anything but established.

The neighbor walks his dog and pauses. The dog strains the leash but the neighbor has forgotten the dog and perhaps even the spousal disagreement that spawned the dog-walk in the first place to consume this apparatus occupying a space within this landscape that cannot go unnoticed. The longer he stands, staring, transfixed, the impact of a larger universe gradually supplants the minutia that consumed yesterday, and the day before. . .

More wenge inlays. Top right hinge corner of the gate.

Eliminating the wenge inlays and settng the tapers as continuous. Leaving us with an all together new aesthetic for the front gate design 214-2. Simpler, maybe, but every bit as confusing.

Front gate design 214-1 as a scaled-back draft, without the blocking and inlays. We eliminate all the extraneous details for something that be a more welcoming accompaniment to a normal garden, owned by a normal homeowner.
