WOOD FENCE PANELS #7
Berkeley, CA
Wood Fence Panels Style #7 enjoys its first commission in the Berkeley hills. A cousin to fence styles #21, yet considerably more muscular. The grid dividers are 2-1/4″ width, with each grid opening at only 2-7/8″.

When the homeowner is a noted landscape architect with a polished eye, the prowells relax . . . relishing in the roles of mere subservients. Collaborators, at best.

We’ll make this declaration: Our favorite trash enclosure to date. There is little need, on this application, to incorporate a gate. A simple 3-sided enclosure is sufficient.

Throughout, the wood fence panels and posts have been fitted with copper shields. Because the posts show end-grain that is vertically exposed, they should be sealed with emulsified liquid wax. Any wood or copper caps are simply decorative and functionally unnecessary. The top rails of the panels do not have end-grain exposed, therefore require no wax sealing, and again, the copper shield serves as a nice aesthetic feature.
But more . . . the copper shield creates a cavity between the shield and the wood without air flow or light. The cavity absorbs moisture from the air–humidity, fog, dew, rain, etc–and thus creating a smorgasbord for potential fungus. Not so much with western cedar, but as a rule, never a good idea.

A typical wood panel, with 130 joints.

The tighter the growth rings, the older the tree at harvest. The result: more stable assemblies.

If we made just one size grid panel, over and over, we would invest in a humongous vacuum press. But Prowell is old school and not only is every commission new and different, each joint is clamped with its very own personal baby clamp.
