A straight forward photo that illustrates the basic pattern of the Arts and Crafts garden gate #38. The pattern varies to accommodate different gate widths. The same basic layout, but for the slight changes when the wider widths requires additional pickets, as illustrated in several examples below.

WOOD GARDEN GATES #38-1
Santa Rosa, CA
(No open mortised squares)
Wood gate #38-1 as double gates. Because of the wonderful, but irregular stone, the jambs were mounted to the column’s block core. A measurement was provided from the block to the outermost edge of the stone. Prowell created jambs that were 1/2″ thicker, or deeper, than the provided dimension, allowing free swing and preventing the gate from striking or binding on the stone. — Our overall opening is 79″, and at a height of 83″.

The G640 Lariat Grips from Rocky Mountain Hardware are 16″ C to C, with back plate escutcheons G684 at 24″ length x 3-1/2″. Available with the backplate, or mounted directly to the gate.
WOOD GARDEN GATES #38-1
The inside face of Garden Gate #38-1 as an example of gates without the usual latches, preferring instead the Rocky Mountain grips upon approach and on the inside. Also shown is the #80-100 Cane Bolt. The 50-400 clasp can be secured with a padlock, when away for the weekend. Not a combination we see too often, simply because it disallows entry from the street, and if you disengage the clasp to allow that entry, the gates have no means of latching to a closed position.

WOOD GARDEN GATES #38-4
San Anselmo, CA
(With open mortised squares in top rail)
We include the wood gate #38-4 simply to illustrate that not all of our Garden Gates are flanked by Prowell’s fence panels nor do they all adorn mega-mansions. A hog-wire fence isn’t normally associated with an aesthetic border, and yet it can work, and in fact does appear to work in this setting. An example of a site photo we’d like to see in another couple of years when the fencing is softened with climbing vines.

The side wood fence gate, as with #38-4, illustrates how it is acceptable to couple the open style of the #38 with a clean wire fence construction.
