Custom Wood Gate Design #9 exhibits a center stile, with tighter spacing between the lower pickets (3/4″) and horizontally aligned grids within the upper section.

This is an optional solution for maintaining a sense of design, while offering a little more privacy.

A wonderful 1920’s Dutch Tudor tucked into one of Chicago’s inimitably charming hamlets. Our homeowners were looking to segment their existing drive to incorporate a garden area adjacent to their portico entry. This was accomplished by first creating a separation utilizing a blend of Tudor and Arts and Crafts motifs in the gate and matching panels Charles has drawn from the geometry of the upper horizontal sections of the front windows, mimicking both their orientation as well as their divided lites.

The concrete surface of the old driveway will eventually be removed and landscaped to include an approaching walkway that leads to the gate.

The job site.

It was this week, during the course of our project, that this Chicago hamlet was struck with a 17-year cycle of frenzied cicadas. Hundreds of thousand of rackety, deafening cicadas drowning out phone conversations between Charles and his patron. A patron, who it turned out, had a morbid, psychotic fear of bugs to begin with and who, during this ‘cicada week’, nearly lost her mind. Often she called Charles, engaging in the specifics of their project while standing in the closet, with the door closed.
We’ve translated this into a bit of fiction found on Gate style #70-7

Posting this and recalling the inordinate amounts of time spent with our patrons on this project to the extent that apparently their speed dial included Prowell Woodworks and the munchlin on the left on more than one occasion called Charles to engaged in a babbling conversation.

The hinges and latch were provided as the originals, forged 100 years ago. The only hinge system we show on this web site that swing both in and out. Although we do not offer the double-swing option, we did take copious photos of them in the event we change our minds.

We also replicated the original gate thickness of 3-3/8″ (Our pricing for #9-1 here is for the standard thicknesses.). A rare undertaking, and agreed upon only because the customer arrived at the shop, with the tattered old gate, and her two little granddaughters and how could we say no?
