Our homeowners have opted for the Yale Bluetooth dead bolt. Powered by AA batteries, these are manufactured for residential entry doors, with the battery housing located on the interior side of the front door. There are a number of options to achieve this result: The Emtek EMPowered keypad dead bolt and the Level Bolt, which replaces the cylinder on any Rocky Mt dead bolt. Both with bluetooth capacity. An arty portal through the wood garden gate and into the modest backyard, landscaped with an inimitable Hawaiian appeal. Judging from the board and baton siding, the property would date to the late 20’s.

With the architecture itself featuring the low-pitch roofline, the same precedent should follow with the planting. Selecting low plantings that will not in coming years completely upstage the house itself.

We throw this site in, located a few hundred miles north of Chicago along Lake Michigan, not so much for how the gate fits within the schematic of an existing fence, but to impress you with how a few thoughtful revisions can redefine an otherwise unassuming curb appeal.

(Please, when painting the gates, allow them to breath for 2-3 weeks prior to applying any non-absorbent finish. Absorbent finishes, such as WoodRX, are flexible and move with the breathing wood. Paint does not, and particularly so in areas such as Georgia in August. Allow the cedar to acclimate, and then apply your paint finish.

The wooden spokeshave shown was one of the many hand tools Charles inherited from his step-father, or his step-father’s father, or his step-father’s father’s father. A tool, basically, that belongs in the grip of his hand as much as his hand belongs to his arm.
