GARDEN GATE HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS
When the Prowell gates were first introduced, our only gate hardware options were a few scattered Romanesque offerings from a manufacturer in England. Ugly iron thingies that rusted, and frequently broke. The stateside bronze manufacturers were stubborn, refusing to believe a market existed. It took ten years of whining and begging and boasting of prospective sales quotas before we turned the corner.
Today, surprisingly, the market remains limited. A few manufacturers of quality products and a virtual medley of choices that fall far short of excellence.
A few of the products listed here are simply linked to the manufacture’s website. We don’t sell enough to warrant an account, but the products have been tested and are worthy solutions to various needs.

DOUBLE GATE HARDWARE
Commonly, double gates will opt for a dummy, or inoperable latch on the fixed gate. The majority of you do not. While the Dummy latch offers symmetry, it also offers the confusion to the arriving guest of which gate works. Half the time the wrong gate, met with the abruptness of a fixed cane bolt before turning to the other, operable gate and ultimately, eventually, your guests gain access in a fit of minor agitation.

Rocky Mountain Cane Bolt CB
STRIKE PLATES
The strike plate for Rocky Mountain and Coastal Bronze latches should be chiseled in flush to the post. If it is simply surface-mounted, you’ve eliminated 1/4″ of the 3/8″ swing gap.
H ow NOT to install a Rocky Mt latch strike. The gate will swell in the wet season and be prevented from closing by the thickness of the strike.
AGED BRONZE
The below image shows a Rocky Mountain latch in Brooklyn two years after installation. For areas with hard winters or direct coastal access, the bronze oxidizes to the image below.
T he below image, exposed for six years to coastal salt air of Pismo Beach in California, shows no discoloring at all. The difference is the homeowner treated their latch with a marine grade polish and lubricant once a year.
ROCKY MT DEAD BOLTS
The Rocky Mountain dead bolts involve a slightly different installation than most dead bolt manufacturers. Two distinctions: The face bore is only 1-⅝” rather than the standard 2-⅛” dia. Secondly is the Cylinder Mounting Plate, #8 below.

It firmly and quietly pushes gates closed, making it ideal for use with Lockey Locks, magnetic locks and other latching devices. SURECLOSE HYDRAULIC KNUCKLE HINGES
SureClose is not available through Prowell
Advantages: A high-end, regulated closing speed without the visible hardware bulk of the Lockey Closers above.
Disadvantages: At $600 per gate, not cheap.

The external mounting brackets allow quick and easy alignment and installation. No need for drilling large holes! Designed for commercial, industrial, custom residential and estate gates, SureClose ReadyFit hinges come in two basic models, with choice or aluminum or steel mounting brackets. All self-closing models feature a final snap action for overcoming electric or coded locks found in many security applications. The SureClose Stop is required. It mounts to the bottom of the post to prevent the 108SF models from being forced open beyond the 88º.

Most gates require only one SureClose Hydraulic closing hinge, shown on the bottom. The upper hinge is identical, but non-hydraulic.
The cylindrical end of both hinges adjusts the gap between the gate and post. A huge convenience to the installer, who can assume an even gap along the swing/latch edge by simply rotating the adjustment hinge cylinder.
ELECTRONIC ACCESS
If you’re considering the security and convenience of an electronic gate access, the vast majority of options are designed for steel gates or front residential entry doors, protected by one insulated side and jambs and a roof and likely a porch. Your wood gate is going to breath, fully exposed to the element such that any attempt toward an electronic access that does not result in the 3/8″ gap for swing clearance is a gate that Prowell cannot warranty. SHEPARD HARDWARE 3762E HEAVY DUTY JUMBO HARD PLASTIC GATE WEDGE.
A simple stop to prop the gate open during gatherings or periods of high traffic. The distinction with this stop is that, unlike all others, it’s overall height is 2-½”. Thus functional for the standard 2″ bottom clearance we call out on our gates. This can be purchased off Amazon for about $8. by Clicking Here

Another solution to preventing your gate from slamming in the event you neglected to egage your latch, etc. Repeated slamming is bad, and particularly if the gate is hing off jambs centered on masonry columns, where the gate, against a strong wind, can slam against the leading edge of the column, ultimately causing high stress to the gate’s joinery.
*The Ashley Stop also features a hook and eye such that the gate can be fixed in an open position. At 3-7/8″ height, it covers the standard 2″ bottom clearance between the grade and the gate.
