When cutting the posts close, leave them 1/2″ higher than the panels and seal the end-grains with Anchor Seal–a liquid, emulsified wax that lasts forever. A good view showing the care that’s taken to insure the horizontal rails align with those of the fence panels.

WOOD GATES #99-1
Muir Beach, CA
Life on the edge of the world, subject to the blowing thick fog and storms charging in off the Pacific and the uncompromisingly rough seas of the northern coast, while also enjoying the cerulean blueness of a rare sunny afternoon in August. The worst mistake a designing eye can make is to obscure this view, to introduce anything solid. Keep the exposure as open as possible, while also being mindful of how the deer would like nothing more than to feast on the dahlias in the garden. Horizontal wood gate #99 is the anchor, while the odd angles of the fence settings exemplify the characteristics of the setting.
