To maintain the friendly appeal of an open picket style, while providing visual privacy, the pickets of this gate design are only 1″ width and spaced at only 3/4″ instead of the normal 1-1/2″.

B ecause the stone is only marginally uneven, the jambs were mounted directly onto the stone, requiring a little cold-chiseling of the high points to insure an even, stable seat before bolting the jambs to the stone using masonry spread bolts.

Because there are no other gates between these and the site swimming pool, the gates shown are restricted to local pool-access codes–hence the latch is at 60″ above the grade. The gates are also swinging out, away from the property, and fitted with self-closing spring hinges. Three requirements sited by almost all local building codes in the U.S.

Note: If painting your gates, they can be primed upon receipt but should not be top-coated until the cedar has had 2 weeks to acclimate to the local climate.

Larkspur, CA (Marin County)

The original double garden gates style 24, recently unearthed from the photo archives, dated 1994. So, technically, this would be the first. For several years, Larkspur’s Madrone Canyon was ground zero for the earliest gate prototypes–all of which still exist, scattered throughout the Madrone Canyon.

Let’s wax nostalgic: For the year or two Charles lived in the canyon, his patrons were all within a few blocks, allowing him to build whatever he wanted to build. When work slowed he would make the rounds, stopping in for tea and chit chat and by week’s end word had spread: “Charley needs work”. And quickly he was booked for another several months. It so happens, not surprisingly, the canyon is where he met his wife and each and every one of his patrons–from the canyon and greater larkspur, was invited to a raucous wedding stretching into the early hours of the following morning.
