T wo #97 gates and eighteen #5 railings for a home in Los Osos, CA. At railing height of only 36″.
To determine our grid layout, we set our precedent on ten of the railing panels that are the same size, distributing our vertical calculations at 7-5/8″, such that all of the horizontal grid dividers throughout the project are aligned, regardless of the width of each panel. The gates, with their wider top and bottom rails notwithstanding, this gives us equal grids vertically, while providing remainders, or partial grids on the left and right, as shown in the following image below.

If, for example, we’re building just the gate and not a series of matching panels, we will calculate the grids so there are equal grids horizontally, without the narrow remainders shown here.

A series of open grid Fence panels and a glass pool wood gate in Marin County, California. The purpose was to create an entry foyer that is at once open, yet suggesting the hint of separation from the pool area with the randomly inserted tempered glass lites set into the open grids of the fence panels.

Note: We no longer offer the glass inserts to the Gate #97.

The long entry corridor, designed to establish a formal approach, utilizing the open grid pattern to prevent the claustrophobia of a tunnel, while setting randomly placed etched lites here and there to simulate a greenhouse invitation. There are two pool wood gates that separate the corridor from the pool, thus qualifying them to adhere to pool-gate codes
