Horizontal wood gate 99 is similar to #95. But with all four sections of as horizontally oriented pickets. In all, 72 mortised joints.

When cutting the posts close, leave them 1/2″ higher than the panels and seal the end-grains with Anchor Seal–a liquid, emulsified wax that lasts forever. A good view showing the care that’s taken to insure the horizontal rails align with those of the fence panels.

The lower fence panel on the left fronts the edge of the Pacific. We’ll include a view that shows the glimpse of the blue Pacific as seen from the house. Life on the edge of the world, subject to the blowing thick fog and storms charging in off the Pacific and the uncompromisingly rough seas of the northern coast, while also enjoying the cerulean blueness of a rare sunny afternoon in August. The worst mistake a designing eye can make is to obscure this view, to introduce anything solid. Keep the exposure as open as possible, while also being mindful of how the deer would like nothing more than to feast on the dahlias in the garden. Horizontal gate design 99 is the anchor, while the odd angles of the fence settings exemplify the characteristics of the setting.

How do I build this gate?

Charles during the assembly of wood gate design 99. For a standard #99, there are 72 joints that come together during this stage. All before the glue dries on the first joint.
